Top 10 Saturday

The Super Bowl is this Sunday, so I decided that this top 10 list is the best football movies. As sport movies goes, baseball movies are better in my opinion, but there have been a few good football movies. M*A*S*H* has probably the best football scene, but because it's a war movie, it's not on the list. And I still haven't scene "Jerry Maguire" so that is not on the list.
  1. Friday Night Lights (2004)
  2. Brian's Song (1971) tv movie
  3. Rudy (1993)
  4. Wildcats (1987)
  5. Waterboy (1998)
  6. Little Giants (1994)
  7. Longest Yard (1974)
  8. Knute Rockne - All American (1940)
  9. All the Right Moves (1983)
  10. Invincible (2006)

New in town

A new movie comes out this Friday. Rene Zellweger stars as a big town girl, and she has to move to a small town in Minnesota. well, I thought it looked pretty good. But after these reviews I think I changed my mind
"Good people of Minnesota: Stand up! Fight back! Take back your state and your culture and your accent"! (Assoc Press)
"Frozen Capracorn [that] will leave you cold...Minnesotans might legitimately want to sue for defamation". (Frank Swietek)
At RottenTomato.com they had 15 reviews...only 2 were good for the movie.

I did see "Nortorious" about the life of rapper Nortorious B.I.G. Even though I didn't know any of the songs in it, I thought the movie was good. On my top 10 list (for movies about singers), I would drop "Walk the Line" & put this at 10th place. At Rotten Tomato, it got 49 good reviews, 42 bad reviews.

Gophers vs Trojans

I know some of you don't follow the Minnesota football team, but I had to write about who they are going to play in 2 years. Usually the first 4 games of a Gopher schedule is soft (teams that are not that good). They have been criticized for doing this. Well, they decided to change this, and boy did they. They are opening their 2010 schedule at home with the USC Trojans. The next year, they play in Calf. USC has won the national championship twice in the last 6 years, finished 2nd three years ago, and 3rd last year. The last time Minn was national champions, was 1960. USC has won the championship 7 times since then. It might not be pretty, but it's going to be exciting to play them.

Top 10

This top 10 is about the best of the worst.

Well, worst is a bad choice of words, but this list is about shows that only lasted 1 year. I think we all had shows that we liked that only lasted a short time, and we get bummed about it, because it was a show we spent watching week after week. I left W*A*L*T*E*R off the list (Radar becomes a St. Louis cop) because only a pilot was shot, and then shown on tv later. So it is hard to say if it was good or not, after only 1 showing, but I wish it would have lasted longer. Suprisingly, most of them had some pretty famous people in them.I listed the famous person, but this does not mean they were the star of the tv show.

  1. Freaks & Geeks (1999) Joe Flaherty
  2. My So-Called Life (1994) Claire Danes
  3. The Outsiders (1990) Billy Bob Thorton
  4. Jack & Bobby (2004) Christina Lahti
  5. Police Squad (1982) Leslie Nielson
  6. Parenthood (1990) Leonardi DiCaprio
  7. Safe harbor (1999) Rue McClanahan
  8. American Gothic (1995) Shawn Cassidy (creator)
  9. Lottery (1983)
  10. The Byrds of Paradise (1994) Arlo Guthrie
  11. other shows I liked....Dolphin Cove (1989),The Quest (1982), Condo (1983), Opportunity Knocks (2008), Family Man (1990)

Vacation 1973

To make this more of a Muehring page, I am going to add old photos. These are from a vacation we took in 1973. We stopped in Green Bay (yuck), Chicago, South Bend Indiana, Detroit Mich. On the back of the photo of Dana & Troy at the motel it says..."Dana had just jumped up and broke out the letter O in the word motel. p.s. nobody saw him. The picture of the 4 kids was taken at the Henry Ford Museum.

That's Cold!

This is a sign from Annandale last Thursday. They closed the school that day because it was -40 wind chill. I guess this is one reason we now live in Texas.

Movie review

I went to the movie "Slumdog Millionaire" on Sunday. It's about a poor 19 year-old who is on the India's version of "Who Want's to be a Millionaire." After every question is asked, there is a flashback to why he knows the answers. After a slow start, he goes on a role, and many people thinks he is cheating. There is some very funny parts (but it is not a comedy). I did not like the ending, it was ok, but not what I expected. But overall I enjoyed the movie. There is some subtitles, but most of it was english.I give it 7 out of 10.

Top 10 Saturday

It's Saturday again, top 10 time. Looking back, I didn't write to much this week. This week it's the top family vacation movies. Movies when the whole family is on vacation, not just 1 or 2 members (camp movies, or a single person goes somewhere on vacation). I could not find a list on the web, so these are just from memory, so I could have missed one that I forgot about. If you have any more to add, let me know....

  1. National Lampoon's Vacation (1983) a classic!
  2. The Great Outdoors (1988) I like almost all John Candy's movies
  3. National Lampoon's European Vacation (1985)
  4. Dirty Dancing (1987) only drama on list
  5. Captain Ron (1992) if you like Kurt Russell, it's a must see
  6. Vegas Vacation (1997)
  7. RV (2006)
  8. What about Bob? (1991)
  9. Summer Rental (1985)
  10. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

R.I.P.

I thought it was kind of strange that, my list on Sat included the episode of the Wonder Years that Kevin's teacher dies. Well, 2 days later the man who played Mr. Collins past away at the age of 72. He had cancer. Here is a link for the last 1 1/2 minutes of that episode, if interested.

jury duty

Today, I had jury duty. It wasn't much. Had to be there by 8:30 am. At 9:05 am the judge said we were all free to go. Not to exciting, but at least it wasn't an all day thing.

Not a very good sports weekend

Well, the VIKINGS blew it again, and lost their playoff game to the Eagles. Can you believe it's been 32 years since they have been in the Superbowl! The Gophers played a good first Qt in the Insight bowl, but then lost 42-21. Carl Pohlad, owner of the TWINS, died at the age of 93. Now his sons, who never really liked baseball, own the team...yipee. It's a good thing a stadium deal was all set before he died, or I am sure they would have sold the Twins. Pohlad was worth 3.6 billion dollars. He was the 2nd wealthiest man in Minnesota, & the nation's 102nd.
A couple of good sport news....The Gopher basketball team is still winning. They have a record of 13-1 & are ranked 19th in the country. The Gopher hockey team keeps winning also. And the Timberwolves won 2 games in a row! They now have 8 wins, & 23 loses. I guess you can't get to excited.

Top 10 Saturday

Fair is fair. Last week I did the best movies filmed in Minnesota. This week I do the top 10 movies made in Austin (or surrounding area). The movie "Suburbia" had my Diamond Shamrock store on Oltorf in it, but it was a bad movie. All 3 "Spy Kids" movies were made here, I saw 1 of them and it was good, but I can't remember which one it was, so I left it off the list. "Friday Night Lights" the tv show is filmed here but the movie was made in Odessa. Mom loved "Hope Floats" but I never saw that movie.
  1. Dazed and Confused (1993)
  2. The Faculty (1998)
  3. Alamo (2004) critics hated it, I like it
  4. What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
  5. Blank Check (1994)
  6. Secondhand Lions (2003)
  7. Where the Heart Is (2000)
  8. Varsity Blues (1999)
  9. Miss Congeniality (2000)
  10. How to Eat Fried Worms (2006)
